The name Thirty Three Orientals comes from the original name of Uruguay, República Oriental del Uruguay. This group originated as a result of the fight for independence in Uruguay, they were a military group that was led by Juan Antonio Lavalleja, (Country Reports) who was a former military commander with Jose Gervasio Artigas. The ultimate goal of this group was to force the Brazilian military out of Uruguay and ally Uruguay with modern day Argentina. The Thirty Three Orientals went about the country side gathering up men to take back Montevideo from Brazilian forces. They were successful in ousting the foreign army and declared Uruguay independent on August 25, 1825 (Wikipedia) Which caused the Brazil-Argentina war. The Thirty Three Orientals played a major role in Uruguayan independence.
